HHS Moves to Streamline Reporting, Update e-Prescribing Requirements

HHS issued final rules to streamline reporting requirements for hospitals and update technical requirements for electronic prescribing that the Obama administration says could save more than $5 billion in federal funding over five years.

One regulation eliminates outdated hospital management requirements (PDF)—and some reporting rules—in the Medicare Conditions of Participation for those hospitals that treat Medicare and Medicaid patients, which is expected to save about $940 million annually. The other rule applies to providers other than hospitals and includes changes such as updating e-prescribing technical requirements (PDF) so that Medicare prescription drug plans meet today's standards. That regulation is expected to yield more than $200 million in the first year.
