Many hospitals and healthcare systems don’t fully understand their true cost of care, which will make the transition from fee-for-service difficult, said Robert Pendleton, MD, chief medical quality officer for University of Utah Healthcare in Salt Lake City.

“In healthcare we have been unfortunately lagging in terms of developing really meaningful metrics,” Dr Pendleton said.

He added that University of Utah Healthcare spent time to understand its true cost of care to understand where its inefficiencies were.
