Robert Galvin, MD, CEO, Equity Healthcare, The BlackStone Group, says that as a primary care physician he has a bias that the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) is a great model, but it is very difficult to implement. There are many challenges to ensure the success and longevity of a PCMH. For example, the lack of time for physicians to spend with patients, a large enough staff, and expensive IT systems are all issues that the PCMH faces.

Dr Galvin says that more capital, more investments, and patience are all necessary for the model to mature.
