Dr Robert A. Gabbay Calls for a Shift in Diabetes Care Models

CMS’ shift to value-based payments has also shifted diabetes care models from cost-centered systems to cost-savings centers, according to Robert A. Gabbay, MD, PhD, chief medical officer and senior vice president of Joslin Diabetes Center and editor-in-chief of Evidence-Based Diabetes Management.

He added that traditionally, many health systems look to recoup lost investments through procedure revenues; however, physicians ideally want to prevent these future complications and surgeries. Dr Gabbay suggested that the cost-savings system is a way to achieve this goal.

“If you’re going to control overall costs of diabetes, you’ve got to decrease long-term complications and therefore invest in the things that we already know that work,” he said.
