Since there have always been skeptics about accountable care organizations and managed care movement, the recent announcement from HHS Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell that CMS would be moving to value-based payments is a big deal, according to Joseph Gifford, MD, chief executive of the Providence-Swedish Health Alliance.
The message from Secretary Burwell was a nail in the coffin for the idea that this push for value contracting was going to pass.
"And this isn't the Affordable Care Act, where there are a lot of political arguments about it," he said. "I think people recognize that this is bipartisan and it's here to stay."
