A special issue of Evidence-Based Oncology™ provides full coverage of the conference, which The American Journal of Managed Care® presented November 16-17, 2017, in Philadelphia.
CRANBURY, N.J.—If you missed the annual conference, Patient-Centered Oncology Care® (PCOC®), which took place November 16-17, 2017, in Philadelphia, a special recap issue of Evidence-Based Oncology™ now offers full coverage of the meeting. It is available here.
PCOC® is presented each year by The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®), bringing together stakeholders from across healthcare to discuss challenges in technology, reimbursement, and bringing value-based principles to cancer care. In 2017, keynote speaker Michael Kolodziej, MD, formerly of Aetna and Flatiron Heath and now of ADVI, discussed the challenges of controlling costs. “If oncology is going to get fixed, oncologists need to fix it,” he said.
The conference has grown in importance as Medicare and commercial payers have embraced the use of clinical pathways and new payment models, including the Oncology Care Model (OCM).
“The best answers to drug prices and access, data transparency and sharing, and solutions that start with patients will come from tearing down the barriers within the care delivery structure. And that’s just what PCOC® does,” writes Mike Hennessy Sr., chairman and CEO of MJH Associates, the parent company of AJMC®, in a message to readers.
Speakers at the 2017 meeting discussed these topics and more across four broad categories:
Regulatory updates: An FDA official offered a view of the agency’s new proactive perspective to drug development, and panelists discussed right-to-try legislation.
Digital technology: Attendees heard from experts on clinical pathways, data collection, and point-of-care digital tools, including representatives from Via Oncology and Flatiron Health, who were later involved in major acquisitions.
A session on Value addressed implementing the OCM, the role of real-world evidence, and the impact of novel therapies.
Finally, the session on Patient-Centered Care discussed the role of nurse navigators, the use of data to improve patient experience, and managing care transitions.
