Kerri Sparling, writer/editor at patient diabetes blog Six Until Me, knows from experience the importance of having a community support system when dealing with a chronic illness like diabetes.

“I have this whole community of people who understand not only the ins and outs of the medications that I’m taking but they understand the subtle nuances of what its like to live with a chronic condition,” Ms Sparling says. “And the psychosocial sort of boost that I get from that is as important to me as my insulin.”

Ms Sparling adds that social media played a critical role in allowing her to communicate with other patients dealing with diabetes as well as to expand her network of peers.
