During their cancer journey, each patient has choices to make in terms of treatment and the oncologist's role is to help with the decision. In addition to offering his own personal preference, it's important to provide alternate options, he said.
"You can't [help the patient make the best choice for them] if the patient doesn't understand what their values are," Dr Yu said. "So that requires some exploration.
