Can population health be improved through the use of alternative payment models?
I think so. It will require an effort from us, the physicians, our practice; patients have to be engaged. I think more and more patients and families are getting more empowered with their own information, access to their own electronic medical records, so they are more aware. It’s a more proactive approach instead of a passive approach for their own health, and I think the patient population’s health will improve because we have other providers in healthcare like our care management team that are accessing these patients, calling them, asking questions about their well-being, potential side effects or toxicities from treatment. We have coaches of health trying to address any issues before they become a big problem. We discuss diet, nutrition, and exercise. All these things will equal improved healthcare for the population in general. As people get more empowered and more informed with good data, they will utilize the information well and do better for themselves.
