"I think probably most importantly, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) seeks to expand insurance coverage for a large population of people," said Colin Cooke, MD, MSc, Assistant Professor of Medicine, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. Dr Cooke also discusses the importance of accountable care organizations (ACOs) in regard to the ACA. Groups will be responsible for the cost of care for their patient population as well as the quality of care. Dr Cooke states that the success of accountable care is dependent upon patients no longer being limited to their choice of provider. He says that the quality of care will improve now that there is accountability for measuring quality.
