An article from Becker’s ASC Review referenced a study published in the April 2024 issue of The American Journal of Managed Care® (AJMC®). The study, “Prices and Complications in Hospital-Based and Freestanding Surgery Centers,” found that higher prices for procedures performed in hospital outpatient departments did not indicate better quality compared with procedures performed in nonhospital ambulatory surgery centers.

A report released by the National Association of ACOs cited 2 studies published in AJMC. The first, “Changes in Specialty Care Use and Leakage in Medicare Accountable Care Organizations,” was published in the May 2018 issue and found that leakage of specialty care changed minimally in the Medicare Shared Savings Program. The second, “Accountable Care Organization Initiatives to Improve the Cost and Outcomes of Specialty Care,” was released in the May 2024 issue and found that engaging specialists in accountable care has numerous challenges and represents an emerging area for accountable care organizations.
