An article in Becker’s Hospital Review highlighted an article from The American Journal of Managed Care^® (AJMC^®) on physician cross-checking. The AJMC^® article, “Physician Cross-Checking Reduces Adverse Events in Emergency Departments,” covered a study that found systematic cross-checking between physicians in the emergency department resulted in a 40% reduction in adverse events and a 47% reduction in near misses, defined as a medical error that has the potential to cause an adverse event, but did not, either by chance or intervention.

The National Pharmaceutical Council’s Monday CER Daily Newsfeed included the AJMC^® article, “Institute for Patient Access Issues Response to ICER Review of CGRP Inhibitors for Migraine.” The article reported that the Institute for Patient Access issued a response to a report by the Institute for Clinical and Economic Review stating that although CGRP inhibitors are projected to have a positive impact on the health of patients with chronic or episodic migraine, it is likely that they will exceed commonly cited willingness-to-pay thresholds.

Wednesday’s CER Daily Newsfeed included 2 articles from AJMC^®. The first, “ICER Releases Draft Scoping Document on Biologics for Asthma,” reported that ICER will consider 5 monoclonal antibodies that alter the pathways involved in the type 2 inflammatory phenotype of asthma, which accounts for half of individuals with severe asthma. The second article, “Employers Play an Increasingly Important Role in the Move to Value-Based Care,” provided coverage on the keynote speech from AJMC^®’s Accountable Care Delivery Congress. The keynote speaker, Suzanne Delbanco, PhD, MPH, executive director of Catalyst for Payment Reform, explained that employers may not look forward to purchasing healthcare, but they, and other large purchasers, are in the position to transform the market.

WVNews, a West Virgina news outlet, highlighted an AJMC^® published study in its article on opioid safety management. The study, “The Economics of Opioids: Abuse, REMS, and Treatment Benefits,” discussed the economic burden of opioid misuse; the economic impact on prescribers, payers, and patients; and the impact of the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy program.
