This supplement to The American Journal of Managed Care reviews the clinical benefits of in vitro allergy testing for physicians, patients, and payers. It describes the numerous challenges to the diagnosis and management of allergic diseases in the primary care setting, and discusses the value of specific immunoglobulin E testing. This supplement also reviews the economic burden of asthma and allergic disease, and discusses management strategies to reduce costs and improve patient outcomes.
