Discharging Medical Debt Through Charity
A 5-year-old charity called RIP Medical Debt buys medical debt incurred, so far, by more than 250,000 Americans. We talk to one of the cofounders and coauthors of End Medical Debt, the book they wrote about the issue.
The burden of medical expenses, whether incurred through a catastrophic illness or surprise medical bills, affects the uninsured and insured alike. In this episode of Managed Care Cast, we speak with Robert Goff, one of the coauthors of the book End Medical Debt. Goff, along with his coauthors Jerry Ashton and Craig Antico, cofounded a charity called RIP Medical Debt. The book discusses why debt is a growing problem and why buying and discharging debt is one way to ease the problem, even as politicians and legislators can’t yet agree on a long-term solution to healthcare costs spiraling upward.
