Paul Ginsburg, PhD, President, Center for Studying Health System Change, says that consolidation plays a role in healthcare costs regarding the shift in hospital and provider market power.
Dr Ginsburg says that there is a high rate of hospital mergers and significant growth of hospital employment of physicians. "So, in a sense probably the most dramatic changes in the market are in the vertical integration, said Dr Ginsburg," "The aquisition of physician practices by hospitals."
