Mark Fendrick, MD, director of the University of Michigan Center for Value-Based Insurance Design (VBID), is testifying on how the principles of VBID and clinical nuance can contribute to healthcare reform in the US military health system.

On Tuesday, February 23, The American Journal of Managed Care's co-editor-in-chief A. Mark Fendrick, MD, director of the University of Michigan Center for Value-Based Insurance Design (VBID), is testifying before the United States Senate Committee on Armed Services Subcommittee on Personnel to discuss how the principles of VBID and clinical nuance can contribute to defense healthcare reform.

TRICARE, a healthcare program of the United States Department of Defense Military Health System, like most US health plans, implements cost sharing in a "one-size-fits-all" way instead of utilizing a "smarter" cost sharing solution that encourages TRICARE members to use services that make them healthier by implementing lower cost sharing, and discouraging the use of services that do not make members healthier through the use of higher cost sharing.

The use of clinically nuance variation in cost sharing gives TRICARE plans a way to encourage members to use high-value services.
