V-BID Center Joins AJMC for Tweetchat on Moving From Volume to Value

Article

On July 27 at 10 am EDT, The American Journal of Managed Care will host a tweetchat with the University of Michigan Center for Value Based Insurance Design to discuss moving from volume to value in healthcare and changing the cost discussion from "how much" to "how well."

PLAINSBORO, N.J.—With Americans being asked to pay greater portions of their healthcare expenditures, value-based insurance design (V-BID) has emerged as a potential solution by lowing or removing financial barriers to essential, high-value clinical services.

On July 27 at 10 am EDT, The American Journal of Managed Care (AJMC) will host a tweetchat with the University of Michigan Center for Value Based Insurance Design (V-BID Center) to discuss moving from volume to value in healthcare and changing the cost discussion from “how much” to “how well.”

V-BID Center Director A. Mark Fendrick, MD, will answer questions from participants and discuss topics including Medicare, high-deductible health plans, and out-of-pocket costs.

“As Americans are asked to pay more for their care, cost-related nonadherence is a real and growing problem for those who are privately insured, as well as those enrolled in the Medicare program,” said Dr Fendrick, professor of internal medicine at the University of Michigan. “Clinically nuanced value-based designs should be part of a national strategy to improve access to high-value services, improve the consumer experience, and lower healthcare expenditures.”

AJMC and the V-BID Center encourage Twitter users to submit their own questions and participate in the chat on Friday by using #AJMCchat. And don’t forget to follow @AJMC_Journal and @UM-VBID.

Dr Fendrick is also the co-editor-in-chief of AJMC. In January, he and his AJMC co-editor, Michael E. Chernew, PhD, wrote a special guest commentary celebrating the journal’s 20th anniversary and highlighting the first paper on V-BID (referred to then as “benefit-based co-pay”), which was published in 2001.

About V-BID Center

Since its formation in 2005, the University of Michigan Center for Value-Based Insurance Design has been a leader in research, development, and advocacy for innovative health benefit designs. Value-Based Insurance Design (V-BID) is built on the principle of lowering or removing financial barriers to essential, high-value clinical services. V-BID plans align patients’ out-of-pocket costs, such as copayments, with the value of services. These innovative products are designed with the tenets of “clinical nuance” in mind. These tenets recognize that 1) medical services differ in the amount of health produced, and 2) the clinical benefit derived from a specific service depends on the consumer using it, as well as when and where the service is provided.
